Youngsters continue to chase top honours at EEVZA U18 Beach Volleyball Championship

Saturday 5th of August 2017

Vilnius, Lithuania, August 5, 2017. Wind, sun and emotions from a growing generation of promising players are filling the Beach Volleyball courts in the heart of Vilnius. As many as 46 matches played on Saturday have significantly narrowed down the field competing at the 2017 EEVZA U18 Beach Volleyball Championship in the Lithuanian capital.

Russia’s Denis Shekunov/Timur Ermotik are dominating the men’s competition and impressing the audience every time they take to the sand. They were the first team to progress to the semis before another Russian team - Nikolai Chukhnenkov/Aleksei Arkhipov - did the same after beating their compatriots Pavel Shustrov and Aleksei Gusev as well as opponents from Poland and Belarus.

Teams from Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Latvia and Russia are still alive in the competition and will resume their campaign on Sunday morning trying to make it to the final stages of the tournament where the medals will be at stake.

In the women’s competition, Russia’s Mariia Bocharova/Mariia Voronina and Ukraine’s Sofiia Rylova/Anna Chechelnytska were simply dominant to secure their spot in the semis with flawless 2-0 wins.

Russia’s Anna Movchan/Olesia Andreiuk and Alina Izgina/Ines Mukhamadieva are trying to come back through the losers’ bracket after suffering early setbacks. On Sunday, they will play Poland’s Patrycja Jundzill/Julia Gierczynska and Kateryna Dashevska/Viktoriia Lysytsia from Ukraine respectively to determine which teams remain in contention for the medals.

Women’s teams from Lithuania lost their matches and will follow the remainder of the tournament from the stands – and the same applies to their colleagues from Belarus, Estonia and Latvia.

Another 14 matches will take place on Sunday and determine the eventual medallists of this year’s EEVZA U18 Beach Volleyball Championship.
