Voronina/Bocharova and Åhman/Hellvig crowned Youth Olympic Champions
Buenos Aires, Argentina, October 18, 2018. On Wednesday the medal matches were played at the Beach Volleyball competition of the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games. The Final duels for both boys and girls were rematches of the Gold medal matches of the 2017-2018 CEV Beach Volleyball Youth Continental Cup with both the Russians Maria Voronina/Mariia Bocharova and Swedes David Åhman/Jonatan Hellvig emerging victorious once again.
The girls teams were the first ones to go into battle with the Bronze medal match between Frida Berntsen/Emilie Olimstad from Norway and Devon Newberry/Lindsey Sparks from the United States of America. The Norwegian girls, whose best achievement so far was ninth place in both the 2018 U18 European Championship and the 1-Star/Satellite Montpellier, managed a thrilling comeback after losing the first set to their American peers 2-1 (18-21, 21-13, 15-9).

The Gold medal match between the old friends, Italians Claudia Scampoli/Nicol Bertozzi and Russians Maria Voronina/Mariia Bocharova was a tight one, yet the Beach Volleyball super team of two Maria s could not be pushed down their throne and they grabbed the Gold medals in two sets 2-0 (21-19, 21-19). The Youth Olympic Champion title is one of many currently on the young girls resume, but by far the most prestigious one. And as the Beach Volleyball competition was added to the programme of the Youth Olympics only in Nanjing 2014, Russia is now the absolute leader in medals in this discipline with two Golds - adding to the success of Oleg Stoyanovskiy/Artem Yarzutkin in 2014.
In the boys competition the home heroes Mauro Zelayeta/Bautista Amieva ruined the all-European medal sweep by cruising past the Hungarians Artúr Hajós/Bence Attila Stréli in straight sets 2-0 (21-15, 21-15).

The last match of the Beach Volleyball competition in Buenos Aires was the Gold medal match between Matthew Immers/Yorick de Groot of the Netherlands and David Åhman/Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden. The CEV Youth Continental Cup winners and the 2018 U18 European Champions managed to show their best efforts in the most important game of their careers this far to record a 2-0 (22-20, 21-15) win to claim the Youth Olympic Champion title. David and Jonatan were also the only ones of the finalists, who experienced defeat in Buenos Aires as they lost their opening match of the tournament to Lukas Pfretzschner/Filip John from Gemany in three sets. In the quarterfinals, however, the teams met on court once again and this time the Swedish youngsters were dominant and continued their winning streak up until the final match.
