Shakhtior, Energiya and Stroitel keep perfect record in Belarusian national league

Minsk, Belarus, October 8, 2018. The national championship of the Republic of Belarus continued this past weekend with matches scheduled for the second and first round in the men’s and women’s competitions, respectively. The teams of Shakhtior SOLIGORSK, Stroitel MINSK and Energiya GOMEL boast a perfect record of four wins in as many matches they have contested this far in the men’s championship. 

Energiya GOMEL (pictured above), who are making their debut in the highest division of the men’s national league, claimed two consecutive victories over MARKO-BGTU. If the second match ended in a comprehensive 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-15, 25-19), in the first matchup Energiya GOMEL came back from two sets down to secure a 3-2 win (22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-13, 15-10). 

Shortly before their debut in the CEV Volleyball Champions League, Shakhtior SOLIGORSK secured two 3-0 victories in their matches with Zapadniy Bug BREST. The first of the two matches was an easy ride for Shakhtior (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) but in the second the players from Brest put up much more of a fight, taking the lead at some point. However, with the help of their Ukrainian opposite Volodymyr Tevkun, SOLIGORSK responded swiftly and eventually secured a 25-22, 25-21, 25-13 victory. 


Shakhtior SOLIGORSK celebrated two wins on the eve of their Champions League debut in Minsk 

“This is still an early stage of the season but we have started the national championship in the best way,” Tevkun commented. “We are obviously slowly getting in shape; last week the coach used some of the reserve players in the matches with RGUOR-2001, while this week he opted for others. Since the team includes quite many new players, we still have to develop our chemistry. We started the season by winning the Supercup, and this obviously gave us extra confidence.” 

On Wednesday, October 10, Shakhtior will play United Volleys FRANKFURT of Germany in the first round of the CEV Volleyball Champions League at the local Sports Palace in Minsk. 


Stars in the making: RGUOR-2001 claimed their first points in the highest division of the Belarusian national league 

Rookies RGUOR-2001 claimed their first points as well. This club is actually the U18 national team of Belarus and the future stars of Belarusian Volleyball seem to be getting stronger and stronger. They beat MAPID 3-0 and 3-2 and in the next round, they will be taking on BATE-BGUFK BORISOV. The team from Borisov did not contest the second round of the national league as some of their players and students took part in the sports festival involving children and youth from Russia and Belarus. 

Finally, Stroitel MINSK comfortably claimed two 3-1 victories over Legion OBUHOVO to stay unbeaten. 

As for the women’s national league, the rivalry between teams from Grodno and Mogilev looks set to continue this season. Zhemchuzhina Polesya beat Minsk-2 3-0 and 3-1 while Pribuzhe BREST routed RGUOR-2002 without conceding a set. Kommunalnik GRODNO and Kommunalnik MOGILEV, on the other hand, claimed one victory each in their double header.
