SAAREMAA VC crown European debut with resounding win

Kuressaare, Estonia, November 6, 2018. The reigning national champions of Estonia, SAAREMAA VC, crowned their historic debut in the European Cups with a resounding 3-0 (34-32, 25-20, 25-15) home victory over Denmark’s GENTOFTE Volley much to the delight of a partisan crowd of 800 fans. SAAREMAA VC could not ask for a better way to start their journey in the 2019 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Men and can optimistically look forward to the return match in Denmark next week. 
The first set was a real thriller with both teams having a number of opportunities to take it. In the end, the home team were able to secure a dramatic 34-32 win and the drums and singing of the fans got incredibly loud. The result of the first set was also the key moment in the game. “There was a big fight there and after that, it was a bit difficult to focus again. We were able to hang in there in the second set but not more,” said Shane Kelly Smith, head coach of GENTOFTE Volley. “In the second game we need to deliver a much better job, especially in stopping their attacks and our service also needs to improve,” he added.
Rauno Tamme played a big role in the Estonian win with 14 points: “The start was difficult, but the end of the first set gave us confidence and in the second and third set we improved our game a lot.”
Urmas Tali, head coach of SAAREMAA VC admitted his team played for the whole country. “This was a big thing for the whole community of Saaremaa and I think today we played not just for our club or local fans but for the whole of Estonia. I am sure the game in Denmark will be much more difficult and we will try to prepare the best we can,” Tali commented.
