Russian ‘Lions’ secure promotion to CEVCupM semis
Ljubljana, Slovenia, March 1, 2018. Belogorie BELGOROD dropped the first set of their re-match with ACH Volley LJUBLJANA in the quarterfinals of the 2018 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men but swept the following three to secure their progression to the semis where they will be playing Asseco Resovia RZESZOW of Poland.
• Slovenia’s ‘Orange Dragons’ started very determined and claimed an 8-4 lead in the first set. Belogorie were not as dominant from the service line as in their previous matchup, and as a result, Jan Pokeršnik and Dmitrii Babkov could develop a very effective attacking game for the home side (16-13). Belogorie eventually drew level at 22-all but ACH Volley remained focussed to claim the first set 25-23.
• Belogorie responded to this setback by claiming an early lead in the second set (8-6) and extended it to 16-9 by the second technical time-out. The visitors visibly stepped up the quality of their game compared to the previous set (19-13) but the hosts fought back to 19-20. However, the final section of the set fully belonged to Belogorie (25-21).
• The third set was a close affair up to 13-all before Belogorie scored three points in a row to make it 16-14 in their favour. ACH Volley had two set points at 24-22 but failed to cash at least one and Belogorie eventually fought back to secure a 28-26 win.
• Belogorie set the tempo from start to end of the fourth set, thus securing a 3-1 victory to go with their 3-0 home win from two weeks ago.
Zoran Kedačič, head coach of ACH Volley LJUBLJANA: “ I am happy with the game my players showed. I knew we would play a lot better on home court and they really left their heart out there. Maybe it would have gone differently if we had brought home the third set but these are just assumptions. I am glad my team proved we could fight well against a team as strong as Belogorie.”
