Latvia crown their first ever Snow Volleyball national champions
Sigulda, Latvia, January 29, 2018. Latvia hosted their first ever Snow Volleyball national championship, aka the ‘ERGO Winter Open’, on January 27 in Sigulda, and namely at the local Fischer skiing centre. Latvia is one of as many as 17 European countries organising a national championship this year – with the respective winners qualifying for the inaugural CEV Snow Volleyball European Championship, which will take place from March 23 to 25 in Wagrain-Kleinarl and Flachau, Austria.
The competition featured two women’s and sixteen men’s teams, with most of the players having a solid Beach Volleyball background, however there were also a few brave young enthusiasts, who tried their skills on the snow. The spectators enjoyed the unique opportunity to see first-hand this rapidly growing sport, while listening to good music or cross-country skiing next to the Volleyball courts. This combination of winter sports and side events created a great atmosphere for all involved.
After a long day with many exciting matches, Rihards Finsters and Aleksandrs Solovejs emerged as the eventual winners of the men’s tournament. “We tried to enjoy the game as much as we could,” they said after the final match. They added that before going to the European Championship in Austria, they should practice more on the snow and get proper shoes.
Women’s champions Ilze Liepinlauska and Alise Lece, on the other hand, had no problems with the slippery surface. “We loved the atmosphere of this competition and we enjoyed trying something new,” they said with a smile on their faces.
The President of the Latvian Volleyball Federation, Mr Atis Sausnitis, CEV Vice-President and Vice-President of the Latvian Volleyball Federation, Mr Maris Pekalis, as well as the Mayor of the City of Jelgava, Mr Andris Ravins, and the President of the National Sports Federations Council, Mr Einars Fogelis all attended the event held in Sigulda.
The Latvian Volleyball Federation (LVF) is grateful to their long-time partner, the ERGO insurance company, for the long and extremely good cooperation, and more specifically for their support in the organisation of the inaugural Snow Volleyball event held in Sigulda. The LVF would also like to thank the host city since Sigulda made the event possible by providing snow and a lovely atmosphere. The organisers hope that this will become a tradition and many more players and Snow Volleyball enthusiasts will gather in Sigulda next year!
