Former U18 European champions claim gold at last stop of EEVZA Tour
Sochi, Russia, September 17, 2018. Pavel Shustrov and Alexey Gusev of Russia are the eventual winners of this year’s last stop of the EEVZA Beach Volleyball Tour held at Sport INN in Sochi. Gusev and Shustrov emerged victorious from the last day of competition with semis and medal matches featuring Russian teams only.
Sergey Gorbenko and Alexander Likholetov stopped the run of reigning U20 European and U19 world champions Dmitrii Veretiuk and Denis Shekunov in the semis. The younger and less experienced Gusev and Shustrov claimed the second semi against Petr Korolev and Maksim Hudyakov. Korolev and Hudyakov regrouped in time to secure a 2-1 victory (15-21, 21-16, 15-6) in the bronze medal match with Veretiuk/Shekunov before Gusev and Shustrov completed their superb campaign by seizing the gold medal after edging Gorbenko and Likholetov 21-17, 21-18.
“I would like to thank all fans for their support,” an elated Gusev said. “Their support means a lot to us. It was a very difficult tournament but we managed to win the gold medal in the end,” added the 2017 U18 European champion. Shustrov and Gusev have medalled at each one of the last three stops of the 2018 EEVZA Beach Volleyball Tour, securing gold in Batumi and Sochi and bronze in Yerevan earlier this month.
The women’s Cup of Russia ended on Monday as well with rising stars Mariia Bocharova and Maria Voronina edging in three sets the more experienced Ekaterina Syrtseva and Alexandra Moiseeva in the gold medal match. Veronika Vernigorova and Anastasia Lysenko completed the podium. “We earned this title after a very difficult game and I would like to thank our opponents for such a good match,” two-time U20 European champion Bocharova said.
