Estonia ready to host historic FIVB World League tournament
Tallinn, Estonia, June 7, 2017. The Estonian men’s national Volleyball team’s busy summer continues with hosting a 2017 FIVB Volleyball World League Group 3 tournament from Friday to Sunday in Kalev sports hall.
Two weeks ago Estonia did a good job when playing host to one of six second-round European qualifiers to next year’s FIVB Volleyball World Championship. After beating Romania, Kosovo, Montenegro and Hungary, Estonia put up a fight in the matchup with 2012 Olympic champions Russia before losing 1-3 in front of a sell-out crowd.
Last week Estonia made their historic debut in the FIVB World League where they defeated Chinese Taipei 3-2 and hosts Montenegro 3-0 but lost 1-3 to Tunisia. Now it is time to host the second group stage tournament. “It is a tremendous honour for the Estonian Volleyball Federation to host a FIVB World League tournament in what is our debut season in this competition. It also provides a unique opportunity to our fans to follow our national team as they make some more historic steps in their development,” said Estonian Volleyball Federation President Mr Hanno Pevkur.
On Friday Estonia play Qatar, before taking on Venezuela and Greece on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. “We are not focussed on securing a ticket to the Final Four. We will take it one match at a time and see how far this is going to take us. Since we have a long and busy summer, it is very important that all players stay healthy and injury-free,” Estonian team captain Kert Toobal said.
After taking two victories and five points from last weekend’s tournament in Montenegro, Estonia sit in sixth place in the current standing of the FIVB World League Group 3. Germany and Spain, who are still undefeated, lead the way before they lock horns later this week in Linz, Tunisia come next with two wins and seven points, followed by Austria and Final Four tournament hosts Mexico (both on two wins and six points).
