Belarusian national league in full swing as teams collect their next wins

Tuesday 16th of October 2018

Minsk, Belarus, October 15, 2018. On October 13-14, the next matches of the men s and women s national championship of the Republic of Belarus  were held following the same structure as before with teams meeting on court twice over the weekend. The men played the matches of the third round, and the women held the matches of the second round.

The central match of the week was the duel featuring Stroitel MINSK and the ambitious rookies of Energiya GOMEL. The first time they met, the team from Gomel was able to put up a stubborn fight, which showed on the scoreboard – only in the third and fourth sets the clear favourites of the match were able to show their best efforts and turn the game in their direction claiming the victory 3-1 (32-30, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16). In the second duel, MINSK grabbed the victory with much lower costs 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-11). Nevertheless, it is worth praising Energiya GOMEL for their combative mood and rejoice at the emerging of a promising team in the Belarusian championship. The club management might seek a transfer in order to strengthen the efforts of the team before the medal showdown.

In the first match, Kommunalnik MOGILEV was able to put up a fight against the reigning champions, Shakhtior SOLIGORSK. By the middle of the first set the score was leveled at 15-15, but due to the confident game of Siarhei Antanovich and Uladzimir Zhyhmont, Shakhtior won the game 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-21), even though in the third set, the head coach of SOLIGORSK Viktar Beksha changed the lineup and due to this, Kommunalnik were able to show more resistance. In the second match due to the long bench, Shakhtior claimed a landslide victory 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-21).

After the match, the setter of Shakhtior SOLIGORSK Mikalai Shkliar shared his thoughts about his team’s performance in the National League so far: “We won all matches of the National championship. As for teamwork, with each round we manage to do it better and better. Not many of us were together in the summer, since some of our teammates were playing for the National team, they started right away from the match series with the training camp in Poland. On the second day against MOGILEV, the guys showed a good performance. Over time, we will gain momentum.”

This week Shakhtior will travel for the second match-up with United Volleys FRANKFURT at the 2019 CEV Volleyball Champions League. After losing the home match in straight sets, the Belarusians will have to bring their A-game, if they wish to continue their journey in the World’s most prestigious club Volleyball competition.

Another debutant of Division A the capital’s RGUOR-2001 managed to exchange victories with BATE-BGUFK BORISOV by claiming a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-18) victory after losing 0-3 (24-26, 23-25, 23-25) a day prior.

Legion OBUHOVO were able to defeat MAPID twice. The first match was held in a bitter struggle and the hosts could break the resistance of the opponent only in the fifth set 3-2 (25-19, 24-26, 27-25, 18-25, 15-8). The repeat of the match one day later, on the other hand, ended in a landslide 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-18) victory for Legion.

The team from Zapadniy Bug BREST could not find their game after the departure of their star player Khilko and thus lost twice in four sets to MARKO-VGTU VITEBSK.

The persistent struggle and the romping plot delighted the fans of the women s teams in Division A. It is safe to say there are about five teams of equal strength in the championship and it is very difficult for anyone to win a particular match. In Minsk, Minsk-2 and Kommunalnik GRODNO exchanged victories in five-set battles, while in Brest, the heat also raised on site as Pribuzh e and Zhemchuzhina Polesiya exchanged victories after spending a total of nine sets on court.
