Belarus win EEVZA U18 Men’s Volleyball Championship on home soil
Minsk, Belarus, November 26, 2017. The 2017 edition of the EEVZA U18 Men’s Volleyball Championship ended on Sunday in Minsk with hosts Belarus standing on top of the podium after completing a clean sweep of their matches.
In the first match of the day, Latvia easily beat Azerbaijan 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-11). Russia remained in contention for a spot on the podium following their 3-1 victory (21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-22) over Ukraine. The only match in the tournament lasting for five sets was the Baltic derby featuring Latvia and Estonia, with Latvia eventually emerging victorious (19-25, 25-21, 25-27, 26-24, 15-12).
In the evening, Ukraine predictably defeated Azerbaijan (3-0; 25-23, 25-15, 25-14) and they subsequently secured they would finish the tournament with the silver medals around their neck. The tournament in Minsk ended with a title-deciding match featuring Belarus and Russia, with Semen Klimychev of Russia suffering an injury before the start as he broke his finger during the warm-up. Belarus looked ruthless as they stormed to a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-20, 25-18) to claim the title.
