Belarus remain undefeated at home EEVZA U18 Men’s Championship
Minsk, Belarus, November 25, 2017. The 2017 edition of the EEVZA U18 Men’s Volleyball Championship continued on Saturday in Minsk. All the matches on the schedule were more interesting and tense than those contested on the opening day of the tournament.
In the first game of the day, outsiders Azerbaijan rather unexpectedly took the first set (26-24) from their matchup with Russia, but eventually lost 1-3 (26-24, 20-25, 15-25, 14-25). After that, hosts Belarus beat Estonia 3-1 after fighting hard towards the end of the third and fourth sets (25-21, 18-25, 29-27, 27-25). The matchup featuring Ukraine and Latvia followed the same plot (3-1; 34-32, 25-16, 26-28, 25-15) with two very closely contested sets as well.
The match between Russia and Estonia (3-0; 25-18, 25-19, 25-21) was interrupted for about 20 minutes because one of the lamps on the ceiling was broken and small pieces of glass fell down to the floor. Fortunately, no players suffered any serious injury.
The day ended, as the night before, with a match featuring two sides with a perfect record in the tournament, i.e. Belarus and Ukraine. The home team used some of their reserve players at the beginning of the match and as a result, they ended up losing the first set. However, as the ‘first lines’ took to the court, everything fell into place and Belarus claimed a 3-1 victory (18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17). The hosts still have not suffered any loss in the tournament and they are close to securing the top spot in the final standing of the competition.
