The eventual winners of the competition secured their participation in the inaugural CEV Snow Volleyball European Championship, which are due to take place from March 23 to 25 in Wagrain-Kleinarl and Flachau, Austria.
Lithuania’s Beach Volleyball stars and Olympic hopefuls Ieva Dumbauskaite/Monika Povilaityte and the country’s leading men’s Beach Volleyball team, Lukas Každailis/Arnas Rumševičius took up the challenge to show their skills on snow and after some intriguing and exciting matches claimed the women’s and men’s gold respectively. None of the participants had any previous Snow Volleyball experience; as a result, the competition was quite a challenge for all players and a reason of excitement for the spectators in attendance.
After getting acquainted with the specific conditions of Snow Volleyball, the Lithuanian national champions look forward to the action in Austria where they will be fighting for historic medals at the first ever Snow Volleyball European Championship.
The Secretary General of the Lithuanian Volleyball Federation, who is also one of the best former national indoor and Beach Volleyball players from the Baltic country, Mr Andrius Gaidys, enjoyed the opportunity to try out the rapidly growing discipline: “It was very unusual yet very exciting to play on the snow. Snow Volleyball is definitely very exciting and a fun game to play and watch. I was happy to be a part of this historic event in Lithuania and I hope that this sport will one day feature on the Olympic programme and become a spectacular game, thus following the path of Beach Volleyball,” Gaidys said.
