Annual Snow Volleyball event involves 180 players in Saint Petersburg

Monday 7th of January 2019

Saint Petersburg, Russia, January 7, 2019. A traditional Snow Volleyball competition took place on January 7 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, in conjunction with the celebrations for the Orthodox Christmas. This was already the 14th edition of the event, which has somehow been a pioneer in the promotion of Snow Volleyball in Russia.

Once more, the North-West Volleyball Association of Russia organised the event in close cooperation with the Russian Volleyball Federation and the Sports Committee of the city of Saint Petersburg. The general partner was Russian geological holding Rosgeologiya while the joint stock company Avrora was the official sponsor.

As many as 45 teams from Saint Petersburg as well as from the regions of Moscow and Leningrad performed across the eight courts set up at Sestroretsk beach, a venue that has been playing host to a number of Beach Volleyball tournaments as well.

This number accounted for 180 players aged from 12 to 72 involved in the competition and the fans in attendance enjoyed their time despite heavy snowfall at the start of the tournament. The matches were quite spectacular and exciting and continued until sunset.

The organisers prepared an extensive programme of side events including traditional Russian fun activities such as throwing felt boots, tug of war and others. There was a lot of music and entertainment as well. Each participant received a T-shirt as a present from the organisers. All the winners travelled home with diplomas, medals and gifts offered by sponsors and partners.

All participants and guests could enjoy some traditional Russian food free of charge – buckwheat porridge with stewed meat and hot tea – all prepared on site.

Mr Sergey Titov, a member of the FIVB Rules of the Game and Refereeing Commission, was one of the guests of honour and contested a VIP match as well.
